It exists in the form of continuous coils, which is not only convenient for large-scale production and transportation, but also can be transformed into various products such as steel plates, steel pipes, hardware, etc. through cutting, stamping, welding and other processes, and penetrates into almost all industrial fields such as construction, automobiles, and home appliances. From the steel structure of skyscrapers to the shell of household refrigerators, from the chassis of cars to the brackets of shelves, carbon steel coils have become the "basic rations" of modern manufacturing with their high cost-effectiveness and controllable performance.
1. The "identity code" of carbon steel coils: composition and process determine performance
The core components of carbon steel coils are iron and carbon, with a carbon content of 0.02%-2.11%, which directly determines its performance trend. Just like a chef changes the taste of a dish by adjusting the seasoning ratio, steel mills control the carbon content and processing technology to make carbon steel coils present completely different characteristics:

Low-carbon steel coils (carbon content ≤0.25%): soft texture, good plasticity, easy to stamp and form, just like "plastic talent". Common SPCC cold-rolled low-carbon steel coils have smooth surfaces and are often used in products that require complex shapes, such as home appliance housings (such as washing machine panels) and automotive interiors; while Q235 hot-rolled low-carbon steel coils focus more on strength and are suitable for making load-bearing parts such as steel structures and shelves.
Medium carbon steel coils (carbon content 0.25%-0.6%): Balanced strength and toughness, it is an "all-round player". After heat treatment, its hardness and wear resistance are significantly improved, and it is often used to make mechanical parts such as gears and shaft parts. For example, many gear blanks for automobile gearboxes come from blanks stamped from medium carbon steel coils.
High carbon steel coils (carbon content > 0.6%): High hardness, good elasticity, but poor plasticity, can be called a "tough guy". Mainly used to make springs, wire ropes, knives and other products that require high strength, such as the spring frame of a mattress and the chain of a bicycle, the raw materials may all come from high carbon steel coils.

In addition to carbon content, rolling process is another "magic" to shape the performance of carbon steel coils. Hot-rolled steel coils are rolled after heating steel billets. They are thicker (usually 2-20mm), have iron oxide on the surface, and are of lower cost. Cold-rolled steel coils are further cold-rolled from hot-rolled coils. While ensuring strength, it is 10%-15% lighter than ordinary carbon steel, which helps cars reduce weight and save fuel.

The "appearance" of home appliances depends largely on carbon steel coils. The side panels of refrigerators, the shells of air conditioners, and the inner tanks of microwave ovens all use cold-rolled low-carbon steel coils. Their smooth surfaces are painted or coated to present a variety of colors and textures; while the inner drum of washing machines and the shells of water heaters may use galvanized carbon steel coils, which are protected by the zinc layer to improve the rust resistance in humid environments.

In the field of daily necessities, carbon steel coils are also common. 3. Purchase and processing: the key to making the best use of carbon steel coils
When purchasing carbon steel coils, you must first clarify the "scenario requirements". If you are making appearance parts (such as home appliance shells), cold-rolled steel coils are preferred, and attention should be paid to surface finish (no scratches, pitting) and dimensional accuracy; if it is a load-bearing structure (such as a factory steel frame), hot-rolled steel coils are more cost-effective, and the focus is on strength indicators (such as yield strength and tensile strength); if it is used in a humid environment (such as a bathroom shelf), galvanized carbon steel coils should be selected. The thicker the zinc layer (usually 80-120g/m²), the better the anti-rust effect.

Processing carbon steel coils requires "adapting to local conditions". Cold-rolled steel coils have good plasticity and are suitable for stamping and bending. For example, when making automotive covers, they can be stamped and formed in one step through a mold; hot-rolled steel coils are thicker and more suitable for cutting, welding, and making large structural parts. It should be noted that high-carbon steel coils have high hardness, and sharper tools are required for cutting, and annealing may be required before stamping to reduce hardness and avoid cracking.

There is a "little trick" for storing carbon steel coils: the iron oxide scale on the surface of hot-rolled steel coils has a certain anti-rust effect, but long-term storage still needs to be avoided from rain; cold-rolled steel coils and galvanized steel coils should be placed in a dry and ventilated warehouse to avoid contact with water. In particular, if there are scratches on the surface of galvanized coils, they need to be repaired with anti-rust paint in time to prevent rust from spreading after the zinc layer is damaged.
4. Industry Trends: "Green Upgrade" and "Performance Breakthrough" of Carbon Steel Coils
Driven by the "Dual Carbon" goal, carbon steel coils are transforming towards "greening". On the one hand, the application of "short process steelmaking" technology (steelmaking with scrap steel) is becoming more and more widespread. The energy consumption of producing 1 ton of carbon steel coil is more than 50% lower than that of the traditional long process, and carbon emissions are reduced by more than 60%; on the other hand, the research and development of "high-strength carbon steel coil" is accelerated, reducing the amount of steel while ensuring strength. For example, high-strength carbon steel coils for automobiles are 0.2-0.3mm thinner than ordinary carbon steel coils, and a car can lose 10-20 kg in weight, indirectly reducing fuel consumption.

In addition, "functional coated carbon steel coils" have become a new trend. In addition to traditional galvanized coils, new products such as fingerprint-resistant coated coils and self-cleaning coated coils are constantly emerging - fingerprint-resistant coated coils have a smooth surface and are not easy to leave fingerprints after touching, and are often used in home appliance panels; self-cleaning coated coils can repel oil and dust, reduce cleaning costs, and are suitable for kitchen appliances and outdoor facilities.
